HighPoint SSD7180Ā Overview

Compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux, theĀ SSD7180 PCIe 3.0 x16 8-Channel U.2 NVMe RAID ControllerĀ fromĀ HighPointĀ features eight internal SFF-8643 Mini-SAS ports that support up to eight 2.5″ U.2 NVMe SSDs, which allow it to be integrated into custom-built hardware environments. The SSD7180 has a low-profile form factor, supports RAID 0, 1, 10, and Single, and well as transfer speeds up to 14,000 MB/s. It maintains cool operations using an aluminum heatsink and an intelligent fan that activates when needed. Thanks to a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of 920,585 hours, it will have a long operational life.

General Features
Increase Storage Capacity and Write Performance for PCIe 3.0 x16 Host Connectivity
HighPoint NVMe RAID controllers are made for professional applications that require a small-footprint, mass-storage NVMe solution that can take full advantage of the PCIe 3.0 x16 transfer bandwidth. This performance-focused NVMe RAID architecture ensures that up to x4 lanes can be assigned to each device channel, and deliver up to 14,000 MB/s of transfer performance, which is good for professional media workstation and server environments designed to support a wide range of editing, rendering, capture, and streaming applications

HighPoint HPC U.2 NVMe Controllers allow customers to saturate the PCIe 3.0 bus, with write performance over 14,000MB/s, while simultaneously supporting up to 120TB of storage.

Massive Storage Capacity
The SSD7180 features eight independent U.2 channels and can support from 16TB to 120B of storage. This storage can then be configured to act as independent drives or into one or more RAID 0, 1, or 10 arrays.
Platform-Independent NVMe RAID Solution
HighPoint series NVMe RAID controllers are truly independent NVMe storage solutions. Unlike most NVMe devices in today’s marketplace, which are tied to a specific hardware platform or brand of SSD or motherboard, the SSD7000 series controllers do not require a hardware environment with Bifurcation support, or any specialized software released by SSD manufacturers; any AMD or Intel motherboard with a dedicated PCIe 3.0 x16 slot can now support more than 120TB of NVMe storage, and experience sustained write performance in excess of 10GB/s via a single compact PCIe device.
RAID 1/0 (Security and Speed)
Unique to HighPoint NVMe RAID solutions, RAID 1/0 (also known as RAID 10) requires a minimum of 4 NVMe SSDs. It will mirror the data of one stripe array to a second, hidden striped array for security.
RAID 0 (Speed)
Also known as a striped array, this mode delivers maximum performance and requires a minimum of two NVMe SSDs.
RAID 1 (Security)
This mode creates a hidden duplicate of the target SSD, and requires two NVMe SSD’ to configure. RAID 1 is good for bootable volumes.
Flexible, Multi-Stage Cooling Solution
The SSD7180 uses a multi-stage cooling solution that combines an anodized aluminum heatsink with a built-in low noise fans. This design helps ensure the NVMe chipset and RAID componentry remain cool under heavy loads while minimizing the risk of distraction in the work environment.
Linux Distributions
A dedicated team of engineers proactively monitors and updates support for all major Linux distributions to ensure the NVME RAID controllers are compatible with the latest releases of CentOS, Ubuntu, and Debian.

The Auto-Compile feature was designed to streamline Linux installation and upgrade procedures, and eliminates the need for user intervention. Auto Compile is now embedded directly into the open-source driver packages. In addition, each driver release is accompanied by a comprehensive installation guide, which includes step-by-step setup walk-throughs, handy troubleshooting tips, and technical support resources.

macOS Ready
The 2019 Mac Pro is the platform of choice for many media professionals. The high point count NVME RAID controllers are fully compatible with Apple’s latest Mac Pro workstation platform, and are macOS 10.15.x ready.
Windows Platforms
HighPoint NVMe RAID controllers are fully compliant with current Windows operating systems including Windows 10 and Server 2019.
Comprehensive NVMe RAID Management – Graphical or Text Interfaces
When it comes to maintaining critical storage configurations, each customer has specific needs and preferences. Both management interfaces share universal layouts across all major operating systems and can be administered locally or remotely via an internet connection. The Web RAID Management Interface (WebGUI) is a simple, intuitive web-based management tool and is ideal for customers who are new to RAID technology. The CLI (command line interface) is a powerful, text-only management interface designed for advanced users and professional administrators. Comprehensive user guides are available for both interfaces are available from each controller’s Software Updates webpage.

Both interfaces were designed to streamline NVMe Storage Management. Customers can easily track TBW (Terabytes Written) and the temperature of each individual NVMe SSD, ensure the SSD7180 controller is using the fastest available PCIe slot, configure an event log with email notification, and monitor the status of critical RAID configurations in person or remotely via an internet connection.
