Ken-a-VisionĀ designed the 110 VAC US version of their Siedentopf trinocular-head configuredĀ TU19341C Dual-Purpose Trinocular Compound MicroscopeĀ from the ground up as an ideal instrument for entry level to advanced science courses that is durable and student-friendly. Its angled binocular eyepiece design provides a more comfortable viewing experience for the primary user, and a third eyepiece is set on top for additional users or for an instructor to assess a student’s ability in real-time. The entire head rotates a full 360° to facilitate sharing among groups of students and/or the instructor. The binocular eyepiece configuration allows users to view with both eyes open which reduces fatigue common with long-term use of monocular designs. A binocular view also preserves stereoscopic vision for a rich depth of view unobtainable with monocular heads and which is important when viewing textiles, rocks, minerals, coins, and other irregularly shaped 3-D samples.
The optical system features three 10x eyepieces – one with an integrated pointer in the binocular set – placed in a 30°-angled binocular head, a third identical eyepiece set in the center of the head pointing straight up, and a four-objective 360° rotating turret with click-stop positions at each lens. Four objectives from 2x to 40x produce a broad magnification range of 20x to 400x making this microscope a versatile observation tool. Its achromatic glass objectives are designed to correct for chromatic and spherical aberrations in the center 60% of the field of view, so images have a true color representation with virtually no distortion at the central point of observation. If users need to change or replace objectives, Ken-a-Vision designed them to DIN standards to enable parts from many manufacturers to be installed without the need for modifications.
The microscope features a floating stage with spring-loaded specimen clips that offers a deeper working distance than the more common fixed-stage. Specimens are lit from below with an LED and an additional LED is set above the stage for use when observing solid or opaque specimens that require them to be lit from the top. The LEDs are powered by either the included power adapter or permanently installed rechargeable battery pack. There are two independent rheostats providing control of each LED intensity, and to help control the amount of light illuminating the specimen from below is a built-in condenser on the stage. This multifunction adjustability enables precise illumination for the perfect image.
