Supervisor Engine7-E delivers high-performance aggregation deployments with increasing Gigabit Ethernet and 10G Ethernet fiber density along with hardware capabilities to support enterprise-level aggregation functions. Cisco Catalyst 4500E Supervisor Engine 7-E is the first Catalyst supervisor engine to provide 848Gbps per system with nonblocking 48Gbps per slot bandwidth and Flexible Netflow for optimized application visibility, in addition, forward and backward compatibility with most existing Catalyst 4500 and 4500E line cards and power supplies without lowering high performance to provide full investment protection. 4500E Supervisor Engines offers Cisco IOS XE operating system that is designed for multicore CPU architecture of 4500E series switch with Supervisor 7-E, and it also supports service virtualization capability to host applications in parallel with Cisco IOS software in order to use its rich feature sets. Best-In-Class resiliency offers fully synchronization between active and standby supervisor engine in order to continuous forward the packets during supervisor engine switchover to optimize network reliability.

In addition, any two Catalyst 4500E series switch with 7-E supervisor engine connected together by either 10G or 1G SFP can create VSS, which acts as a single catalyst switch delivers up to 1.6-Terabit of aggregate bandwidth with 500Mpps performance. The integration supports up to 768 ports of 1G and 200 ports of 10G system deployment with VSS. This solution simplifies network operation by using single management IP address, forms multichassis EtherChannel (MEC) to logical switch, provides a loop-free topology with no relies on STP, doubles system bandwidth by utilizing active-active MEC across two physical chassis and increases resiliency to minimize traffic disruption from switch or uplink failure.

Each Supervisor Engine 7-E ships with a universal image containing all feature sets, LAN Base, IP Base, and Enterprise Services, the level of functions is determined by the license applied (Default IOS comes with LAN Base with very limited routing features).
